It is officially spring 2013...first calf and cold as a witches booby!!!
Well today Daddy came home and here is what we have been waiting for. It has been one long week with Momma's midnight barnyard checks and Daddy's 4:00 a.m. early morning rising to check for calves. Here is our first arrival of the season....with hopefully three more to come. Daddy is happy because it is a bull calf but Momma likes the heifers better because we keep the girls! Momma has named this one "Tater". He is a big healthy little guy with thick sturdy legs. We made him a nice little nest of hay so hopefully he will not suffer too much with the -6 degree temperatures that they predict for tonight. Last year it was 22 degrees and almost too hot for the poor cows to deliver. This year it is cold as a "witch's booby". Well that is not exactly as Daddy said it but you get the drift! With hopefully ten head of cattle on the ground this year, we are officially "ranchers"! Maybe Mark will be a farmer, maybe not but it is a good way to grow up!
